In his UX consulting engagements, Ryu embeds himself seamlessly into a client’s internal team, and crafts delightful yet feasible user experiences. Below captures key elements of how he approaches his clients’ UX works. In essence, Ryu becomes a member of his client’s internal team fully immersed collaboratively into the team, rather than distancing himself as an external UX consulting professional, which sets him apart from typical UX consulting firms and folks.
Compassion
Compassion is at the heart of user-centered design, which comes from a genuine desire towards making this world a better place. Compassion fuels Ryu’s motivation wanting to listen carefully to what a user has to say, understand what problems a user is trying to solve, so that he can come up with creative ideas to address those problems.
Vision
Even if a project’s timeline is near term, it’s important to envision what an ideal user experience could be in the future, and share that vision with the team. Ryu visualizes a future vision often in forms of prototypes and animations, and work backwards from there to figure out what can be achieved today with that future vision in mind.
Strategy
Strategy can turn the vision into a goal and a roadmap to get there from where things stand today. Ryu works closely with the client’s internal team to strategize how a roadmap can be broken down into steps to work towards the future vision.
Iterative process
In most cases, the process is not linear and clean in reality. Rather, it’s messy. But that’s fine. The key is to make it fluid and iterative. This allows the team to quickly learn and iterate the design and code as they go. Ryu meticulously works through this iterative process with internal team members that often includes engineers and PM.
Collaboration
In order for an iterative process to work effectively, seamless collaboration between people from different disciplines is critical. Even though he is technically a UX consultant, Ryu seamlessly embeds himself into a client’s internal team, and works closely across different teams to achieve the result.
